Michael Huppe at A2IM’s Indie Week: ‘SoundExchange has the best ISRC database in the world’

SoundExchange CEO Michael Huppe addressed the issue of data in the music industry in a fireside chat with Max Willens of Digiday during A2IM's Indie Week.

He noted that the music industry was built previously around the sales model, and for decades a lot of infrastructure based around this model. But with the changes in the past decades and the now dominance of the access model, the industry needs to build up its infrastructure to match the needs created by the digital era.

CRB seeks comments on proposed rates applied to noncommercial broadcasting

Copyright Royalty Judges have solicited comments on the proposed rates and terms for use of certain copyrighted works in connection with noncommercial television and radio broadcasting. for the period from January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2027.

According to a notice published in the Federal Register, interested parties can file comments and objections until February 27, 2023.

ASCAP and NYC Media Lab partner to launch the Music and AI Challenge

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and NYC Media Lab (NYCML) are launching the 'Music and AI Challenge'.

The initiative is designed "to identify creative, cutting-edge concepts at the intersection of music and artificial intelligence."

The ASCAP Lab and NYCML are seeking start-ups and university teams that are "leveraging artificial intelligence to build products that offer novel solutions for the music industry that ultimately benefit music creators."

PPL paid out £244.9 million to performers and labels in 2022, up 7.1% over 2021

British neighbouring rights society PPL has distributed £244.9 million (€278.3m) to its members — performers and owners of sound recordings — and other collective management organisations in 2022, up 7.1% over 2021's £228.7m.

PPL said the figure marks the second highest total of monies paid out by PPL in a calendar year, the highest being £260.2m in 2020, a total achieved thanks to the record collections of £271.8m the previous year in 2019, before the adverse impact of the COVID pandemic.
