US indie sector urges Congress to adopt the HITS Act

A group of some 120 executives from the US independent music sector from 19 states, led by American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) President and CEO Richard James Burgess (pictured, below), have sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to urge them to include in the forthcoming Coronavirus Rescue Legislation a "modest" relief provision for the creation of recorded music.

‘Fully operational’ US Copyright Office resumes activity as government reopens

The US Copyright Office has announced on November 14 that it is back to being "fully operational" following the reopening of the federal government.
During the shutdown, most Office functions were paused but the USCO said it has now "resumed all services and continues to administer U.S. copyright law, including registering copyright claims, recording information about copyright ownership, providing information to the public, and assisting Congress and other parts of the government."

GEMA gets vindication from German court in infringement case against OpenAI over the use of lyrics to train chatbot ChatGPT

The 42nd Civil Chamber of the Regional Court in Munich found in favour of German music rights society GEMA in a copyright infringement case against OpenAI, which was accused of using copyrighted lyrics to train its chatbot ChatGPT without a license. OpenAI plans to appeal the ruling.
